Key takeaways

  • Arrive early in clean sportswear and tell the coach you are new.
  • The class will teach one part of MMA rather than the entire sport at once.
  • You can work at your own pace and rest when needed.
  • Use the trial week to experience more than one discipline before deciding.

Before you arrive

Choose a suitable adult class on the live timetable and arrive a little early. Wear clean sportswear without metal zips, bring water and remove jewellery. The academy can help with loan equipment for an initial session, so you do not need to buy a full kit before you know that you enjoy training.

Tell the coach that it is your first class and mention relevant injuries or concerns. That information helps them guide your session properly.

How the class is structured

Sessions usually begin with movement that prepares you for the topic of the class. The coach then explains a technique in manageable stages before you practise with a partner. Resistance increases only when the group understands the task.

MMA connects striking, takedowns and grappling, but a single class will normally focus on a specific part of that bigger system. Nobody expects you to absorb everything at once.

You do not need to be fit first

Fitness is a result of training, not an entry requirement. Work at a pace where you can listen and maintain control. Rest when needed and focus on learning the movement rather than matching someone else’s output.

The first few sessions can feel mentally busy because the movements and language are unfamiliar. That feeling settles as the positions begin to make sense.

What happens after class

Ask the coach about anything that was unclear and check which session would make sense next. Some beginners immediately know whether they prefer striking, grappling or mixed training; others need to try more than one class.

The seven-day free trial is designed for that decision. It gives you time to experience the academy, not just judge martial arts from one unfamiliar hour.

What beginners ask

Where is Ouroboros MMA in Romsey?

The academy is at Unit 35 AEC House, Romsey Industrial Estate, Romsey, SO51 0HR. Check the directions page before travelling and allow time to locate the unit if it is your first visit.

Can I attend an MMA class alone?

Yes. Many members arrive without knowing anybody. The coach will explain the session and help organise partners. You do not need to bring someone, although friends and family members are welcome to arrange trials together.

What happens if I cannot keep up?

Slow down, take a rest and ask for clarification. New students are not expected to move like experienced members. A useful first class is one where you understand part of the material and leave able to return, not one where you exhaust yourself trying to copy everybody else.
